      Music In Our Lives

      Course Description
MIOL is a music class in which students learn about music history, music theory, and develop skills in playing guitar, drums and keyboard.  When playing the guitar, students learn how to read guitar tablature and chord diagrams. By the end of first semester, students should be adept at playing basic chords including A, C, D, E, and G. Other chords including G7, D7, D6, A7, Am, Em, E7, and B7 are played as needed in for rock, pop, or folk tunes.  RFA students use Alvarez acoustic classical nylon string guitars in class as well as Alvarez acoustic/electric steel string guitars.

MIOL students spend much of their classtime in the RFA Music Lab (room 1418) where they develop their keyboard skills using Korg X5D keyboards.  The students first learn to play easy chord progressions using C, F, G, G7, and Bb chords.  The right hand comps the chords while the left hand plays the bass notes or root of the chords. Students also learn to play simple melodies with the right hand while the left hand plays chords.
