Music In Our Lives

Course Description
MIOL is a semester class offered in two sections.  In the first semester, students develop basic music skills and must pass MIOL I in order to register for MIOL II second semester. The class includes in playing guitar, piano, and drums.

In MIOL I, students learn how to read guitar tablature and chord diagrams. By the end of first semester, students should be adept at playing five basic chords: A, C, D, E, and G.  Other chords including G7, D7, D6, A7, Am, Em, E7, and B7 are played as needed in playing rock, pop, or folk tunes.  RFA students use Alvarez acoustic classical nylon string guitars in class as well as Alvarez acoustic/electric steel string guitars.

MIOL students spend much of their classtime in the RFA Music Lab (room 1418) where they develop their keyboard skills using Korg X5D keyboards.  The students first learn to play easy chord progressions using C, F, G, G7, and Bb chords.  The right hand comps the chords while the left hand plays the bass notes or root of the chords. Students also learn to play simple melodies with the right hand while the left hand plays chords.

Print the two documents below. Practice playing the chords on the basic piano chords sheet using your right hand. Then try playing "Let it Be" and "New Soul" on the piano using the lyric sheets. Follow the beat and play a chord for each beat like we strummed when playing the guitar. Play along with the recording of New Soul and Let it Be.
